Business: Shaylie Roach Creative
What? A small creative studio based in Sydney working with SMB's to bring their visions to life, through thoughtfully crafted digital and print implementations.
How did the idea for your business first come about?
I started my business when I was 18 and at university. I knew the first day I started my degree that I wanted to be a Designer. So with that, I set out with a plan and a Squarespace account to build the business I now have today,
When did you have a ‘f*ck-it moment’ and decide you were going to go all-in and start your business?
I had been working at an agency where I was working on huge brands who didn't care about the process, or the relationship between a client and a designer. I was doing really average work that didn't seem to be making an impact. I didn't feel valued or creatively challenged.
Every morning I was waking up at the crack of dawn to work on my freelance work, and at the end of the day I was rushing home to work on it some more. I've been so lucky to work with such passionate and creative clients in my own business, and possibly a bit spoiled! Because, it was them and the amazing work I get to do that pushed me over the edge.
What were some major challenges you had when starting your business? And how did you overcome them?
I think the toughest part of starting a business when you're a creative is the tax and admin side of things. I had worked out my business plan using the business model canvas and I had well established branding and admin templates. I guess, I didn't anticipate how confusing tracking tax and monitoring my cash flow would be. In fact, I'm still a little confused! But hey, it's a lesson we have to learn and one that is super valuable in forming good business habits.
What has been your biggest “pinch me” moment?
Definitely the growth of the Kombucha business I designed the logo and packaging for. It's so exciting to see their products be distributed all over the UK. They've got an amazing social following with lots of user generated content sent through everyday. It's so exciting to see something you created in someone's home, and even more exciting to see how much joy it brings them.
Starting a business can be gruelling - what keeps you motivated, and keeps you going?
Coffee, coffee, coffee.
No, I think my passion. I love what I do, and I never feel tired of it. Which is why I am in such bad sleeping patterns! I also love listening to podcasts, my favourite's are 'One Girl Band' and 'Your Creative Start', and I am constantly looking for new ways to better myself and my business through e-courses.
How do you create a work-life balance?
This is really important to me! For me, it's all about creating routines that allow you to take some time for yourself before and after work. In the morning, I get up and go for a walk straight away. When I come home I either make a protein shake using Welleco's nourishing vanilla protein, or I have a glass of water with lemon. I like to have a coffee in the morning and make it using my beautiful ceramic v60 which is a slow process. I'm all about that slow living movement!
In the evening, I have a bath with magnesium salts and essential oils and sit down with my favourite green sencha, jasmine & rose tea. All the small quiet moments really make a difference to my work-life balance.
On the weekends it's all about late rises, breakfasts out and walks with my partner.
Words of Wisdom / Personal Quote
Not so much a personal quote, but something I live by.
