How did the idea for your business first come about?
It was from a holiday in Boracay, Philippines in 2009 that started my obsession with coconut oil. The locals were selling fresh coconut oil from the island and told me the benefits of coconut oil for the skin. I’ve been hooked since then!

When did you have a ‘f*ck-it moment’ and decide you were going to go all-in and start your business?
I didn’t start thinking about starting a business until 2015. Since my trip to Boracay I had been using coconut oil as a body moisturizer religiously. People were asking me how I kept my skin so soft all the time. The idea started from there so I decided to give it a go.

Using my own funds I started off with one product, set up a website, opened accounts on social media channels and off we went.

What were some major challenges you had when starting your business? And how did you overcome them?
I think the first year is when you will face your biggest challenges.
Finances was one of the biggest challenges as I had all these crazy ideas of how to grow the business and had a desire to add more products but you quickly learn that all these things cost money… and lots of it. I was always jealous of those who had a whole heap of money to back them up but it was a blessing in disguise as I had to get really creative on how to make everything work with what we had.

Another challenge is staying motivated when things start getting tough. I found surrounding myself with like minded individuals helps me stay motivated as well as reminding myself of my goals and aspirations.

What has been your biggest pinch me moment?
I’ve had a few but the biggest one was probably having one of my friends take a photo of one of the products sitting on a shelf in Urban Outfitters, Hawaii!

Starting a business can be grueling – what keeps you motivated, and keeps you going?
Fellow entrepreneurs! Especially women who are doing a similar thing! That’s why I have found the League to be extremely valuable. Also envisioning myself of where I want to be in 5 or 10 years time keeps me in check.

How do you create a work life balance?
I have always been a big advocate for work life balance. As the saying goes “all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”. I schedule in a lot of me time. If you don’t take care of yourself first and foremost then you can’t function at your best.  I’ll admit in my first year of operating it was all work and no play but once you find your rhythm you can adjust to what works for you and your business.
