Business: Carlii Lyon Public Relations
What? A boutique public relations consultancy
Business Description: I run a boutique public relations consultancy and was the former international personal publicist of Miranda Kerr and have represented pioneers in the world of wellness, New York Times bestselling authors, inventors, musicians, and even a British foot reader! Today I help everyday individuals and small business owners, create, shape and manage their own personal brands.
How did the idea for your business first come about?
A friend, who I consider a mentor, suggested I would be good in PR and I believed him.
When did you have a ‘f*ck-it moment’ and decide you were going to go all-in and start your business?
I was 22, in college studying PR and already had three clients. I was impatient and wanted to put everything I was learning into practice. My business was born and I have never looked back.
What were some major challenges you had when starting your business? And how did you overcome them?
I am a one man show and I contract help when required. In the beginning I took on more than I could service and my results suffered. I have since learnt how to manage my time and client expectations.
What has been your biggest “pinch me” moment?
Being in the Maldives for a magazine cover shoot. I remember looking around and recognising how fortunate I was to be doing the work I do and be in complete control of my time and destiny.
Starting a business can be gruelling - what keeps you motivated, and keeps you going?
I have never really known anything else. I have always worked for myself. The work I do today with women and their personal branding is so rewarding, I am motivated knowing I am helping women put themselves out there and chase their dreams.
How do you create a work-life balance?
It is an illusion. You simply have to find something you love to do so much that you don't need a break.
