When you think you're weird, remember these 5 things
Like me, I bet you have thought to yourself at one time in your life or maybe even on a daily basis, “I don’t think I’m normal”, “I’m weird” and “Why don’t I think like others, what’s wrong with me?”
The truth is you are not normal. We are not normal.
With the thousands of women I’ve had the privilege of discovering and meeting through League of Extraordinary Women, including our inspiring guest speakers and League Members, I started to question “What makes for an extraordinary person?”
To be honest you aren’t normal because you are extraordinary. Truly, you’re a cut above the rest and it’s time to revel in your glory because this is what will give you the fuel to keep going when tough times arise.
This list took me weeks to research and write and I hope it will remind you of your own extraordinary powers.
So here are 5 things to remember when you think you’re weird.
Extraordinary people like you are:
1) Generous givers.
No one has ever become poor by giving – Anne Frank
Whether it be sincere support, words of encouragement or undivided attention, there is greatness in making time to give, especially when it’s inconvenient. With the mindset of “how can I help others, how can I be of service” instead of “how can I gain something from this person” will allow more authentic and deeper connections to flourish. You know that being generous will open the floodgates to abundance and growth.
A great weekly practice is to create a list of people or causes and connect with them to generously give without wanting anything in return. An example might be to connect with a fellow League Member, comment on one of their Instagram posts, ask them to attend an event you think they’ll enjoy, share what you’ve learnt with them, tell others about their wonderful business.
I am what I am today because of the choices I made yesterday – Stephen R. Covey, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
Your life doesn’t just magically “happen”. Life happens because of the choices you make. You choose happiness. You choose decisiveness. You choose to eat chocolate. You choose to be brave. You choose to be fearful. You choose to go for a run. Being proactive means taking responsibility for your life rather than blaming circumstances outside your control. It means focusing on what is in your control and making it happen. It’s saying “I can be more resourceful” instead of “If only I had more money, more sales and customers”.
Recognising that you have the freedom to choose your response to events that occur in your life. As a proactive person, you use proactive language such as — I can, I will, I prefer. Other reactive people use language such as — I can’t, I have to, if only.
Courage is the magic that turns dreams into reality
It takes such courage and bravery to go against the grain because it is in our nature to stay in our comfort zones. Every new venture, project or cause creates feelings of uncertainty, discomfort, lack of confidence and mistakes. The bravery comes from putting on that “Yeah, things are good” face when your bank account is at zero and you don’t know how you’re going to make it through. The bravery comes from weathering criticism and complaints. The bravery comes from knowing all of the struggles yet believing in the end game and why it matters that pushes you to keep going.
4) Open minded.
The mind is like a parachute, it works best when it is open
Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to respond. Most want to be understood and right, all the time. Extraordinary people however, listen to understand, are curious about others opinions and beliefs. It is not a power struggle to be right.
5) Integrity driven.
Integrity is telling myself the truth. And honesty is telling the truth to other people.
Honesty is telling the truth. Integrity is about keeping and fulfilling expectations. Extraordinary people use much care and thought to create promises and use them sparingly. They lead with integrity and build trust from those around them as it fosters a great sense of truthfulness with followers so that they feel a higher sense of purpose and commitment.
