What? Social media expert for parents: Keeping Your Kids Safe Online

How did the idea for your business first come about?

I started as a social media manager (which I still do) and since my niche is in schools and education organisations, I realized quite quickly a lot of parents don't really know what's going on on social media, what their kids are doing, or even how any of it works anymore. Every week it seems, terrible news hits the headlines and people are nervous. What we are starting to see here is a generation of people left behind because of their lack of understanding. So on top of my clients, on top of my day job, I decided to start working on this course.
I've always wanted to make the world a better place, and the biggest issue I see nowadays is: communication. We've become so lost in our phones, we don't know how to communicate with other generations anymore. We have forgotten!

When did you have a ‘f*ck-it moment’ and decide you were going to go all-in and start your business?

I kept toying with the idea and kept making up excuses. But around June 2017 I decided it was just time to dive in. I didn't want a life of mediocrity, I didn't want a life of a 9-5. So I dove in, headfirst. I wrote the accompanying book in 8 weeks, and developed the course over about 5 months.

What were some major challenges you had when starting your business? And how did you overcome them?

Fear of failure - gosh, I still have that now!! I keep the bigger picture in mind. I remind myself why I do what I do, and remember the goals I have set for myself. I want to reach them!

Perseverance - this is where having cheerleaders around you is so, so important. They will keep you going and they will ask the right questions when time get tough.

Marketing - this is soooo hard!!! You canNOT sell without a list. While it sounds easy and breezy to have all these things online these days, it actually makes it THAT much harder to sell. People don't know who you are and it's going to take a lot of time to build up that trust.

What has been your biggest “pinch me” moment?

When I got my second VA and she was really just killing it!!! Having her has been absolutely invaluable and saved me so much heartache and pain with struggling with wordpress and all of that.

Starting a business can be gruelling - what keeps you motivated, and keeps you going?

The bigger picture. I want to be able to look back and say, "I did something good for the world". I don't necessarily need to save it like I used to want to, but I want to have made a difference. Even if it's a handful of people, I want to know that I left a positive mark on people that I cared about, and people I came to know in my business.

How do you create a work-life balance?

Self-care. Lots and lots of selfcare (and therefore discipline). Knowing when to shut off is such an important part of running your own business. Remembering to treat yourself never goes amiss, either. Being kind to yourself. Don't beat yourself up too hard when something fails. You're inevitably going to make mistakes so don't think you are immune to them! Let them happen, learn from them, lick your wounds a little, and keep going full speed ahead.
