1.What was the catalyst for launching your business?

Dessert addict. A major sweet tooth. Lover of lollies and a sore spot for sugar. This is me in a nutshell, and basically sums up my childhood and life as it is today. Growing up it was always about making Vietnamese desserts for large family gatherings, and as I got older, I discovered the world of cakes and cupcakes. It just felt right to use the skills I had learnt from my parents and their family business to make something of myself. From there, The Bake Co was born and I’ve never looked back!

2.What do you love most about what you do now?

I love the whole process of baking, from start to finish. From measuring the ingredients to decorating to delivering the baked goods to a client. But for me, what I love most is receiving that text message from a client expressing how much their mother, father, sister, friend or whoever it may be, saying they loved it. To me, that is priceless.

Baking has become a sentimental thing more than it is creating an end product and putting a dollar value on it. Growing up, birthday cakes were almost non-existent as we simply couldn’t afford it. So now, when I receive birthday orders, it’s just knowing that I have the ability to create a special memory for a special someone out there. It’s the simple things that give me satisfaction and makes the whole process so love worthy.

3.Describe the biggest setback you faced when establishing your business? How did it affect you and how did you push through?

Pricing. We have all started our own business because we love what we do and tend to let our emotions take over when taking on an order whether it’s a product or service-based business.

What I found difficult was understanding the value of my time – so naturally pricing was always a struggle. So eventually all I was doing was just investing all my personal funds into my business. I really had to put my accountant hat on, detach myself from what emotionally drives me to run my business and take a good look at the financials. Since then, I have reviewed my pricing structure, put a monetary value to my time and educated my clients on the pricing of my business.

4.Everyone has days where they feel flat or uninspired – do you have any tricks or tactics for overcoming these feelings?

Don’t judge – sitting on the couch, watching soppy TV dramas and eating some kind of dessert (because who am I kidding – it makes me feel better!). I usually find myself scrolling through Instagram looking at inspirational quotes, cakes and cupcakes to find that spark again. I also have a group of girlfriends that are in business, so calling them for a coffee catch up to vent is always helpful, because us like-minded girls just get it!
